We do not seek to collect sensitive personal data (such as government ID numbers, precise health data, or biometric templates) as part of normal App use. Please do not include sensitive personal data in Stories, comments, or support messages.

3. HOW WE USE YOUR INFORMATION
We use personal information to:
  • create and manage accounts, authenticate users, and provide customer support;
  • deliver eBooks and Stories, downloads, favourites, continue-reading, and reading-progress sync;
  • enable Story Author features, store drafts, process cover/chapter uploads, and run moderation/review before public publication;

  • monitor performance, fix bugs, prevent fraud/abuse, and improve the Services; and
  • comply with legal obligations and protect our rights.

4. LEGAL BASES (WHERE APPLICABLE)
Depending on your location, we process personal information on one or more of these bases:
  • Contract: to provide the Services you request (account, reading library, authoring, Premium);
  • Consent: for optional items such as certain advertising/analytics cookies or notifications (you may withdraw consent);
  • Legitimate interests: security, fraud prevention, product improvement, and enforcing Terms, balanced against your rights;
  • Legal obligation: where law requires retention, disclosure, or response to lawful requests.
If you are in the EEA/UK, you may have rights under GDPR/UK GDPR. If you are in India, we process personal data in accordance with applicable Indian law, including the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, as it applies to us.

5. WHEN WE SHARE INFORMATION
We may share information with:

We do not sell your personal information for money. Advertising partners may process device/ad identifiers under their own policies when ads are served.

6. USER-GENERATED CONTENT AND PUBLIC VISIBILITY
If you publish or we approve publication of a Story, your pen name, cover, story text, and related public metadata may be visible worldwide to other App users. Comments you post may also be public. Do not include personal contact details, passwords, or private information in User Content.
Drafts and in-review Stories are treated as non-public to other readers, but are accessible to our moderation/admin systems as needed to operate the Services.

7. READING PROGRESS, DOWNLOADS, AND LIBRARY DATA
To power Continue Reading and Reading Journey features, we store reading progress (such as percent complete, chapter/part markers, and technical locator data) linked to your account and the book or Story identifier. Downloads may be stored on your device and/or associated with your account for library management. You can clear some local data by removing downloads or logging out; server-side progress may remain until you request deletion.

8. COOKIES, SDKS, AND SIMILAR TECHNOLOGIES
The App and related web pages may use SDKs, local storage, and similar technologies for authentication, preferences, analytics, crash reporting, and advertising. On Android, advertising and measurement may use the advertising ID subject to your device settings and consent prompts (including Google UMP where shown).

9. DATA RETENTION
We retain personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this Policy, including to provide the Services, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and meet legal, tax, or accounting requirements.
Typical retention practices:
  • Account data: while your account remains active and for a reasonable period after closure for security and legal compliance;
  • Published User Content: while published and as needed after removal for backups, legal claims, or safety records;
  • Reading progress: while useful for your library features or until deletion is requested;
  • Logs and security records: for a limited period unless needed longer for investigations.
When no longer needed, we delete or anonymise data, or isolate it from active systems until deletion is possible (for example, from encrypted backups).

10. SECURITY
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures designed to protect personal information, including encrypted transmission (HTTPS), access controls, and hashed passwords. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure. You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for using the Services on secure devices.

11. INTERNATIONAL TRANSFERS
We are based in India and may store or process data on servers or with providers in other countries (for example cloud hosting or CDN regions). Where we transfer personal information internationally, we take steps designed to provide appropriate protection consistent with applicable law.

12. CHILDREN’S PRIVACY AND AGE REQUIREMENT
The Services (including reading, accounts, and all User Content features such as writing Stories, uploading images, and commenting) are intended only for users who are 18 years of age or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly allow users under 18 to create accounts or publish content.
If you believe we have collected information from a person under 18, contact hello@ubooks.app and we will take appropriate steps to delete the account and related personal data as soon as reasonably practicable.

13. YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS AND CHOICES
Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to:
  • access a copy of personal information we hold about you;
  • correct inaccurate information;
  • request deletion of your account or certain data;
  • object to or restrict certain processing;
  • withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; and
  • lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (for example in the EEA/UK).
How to exercise: email hello@ubooks.app from your registered email address, or use in-App profile/settings tools where available. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.
Account deletion: you may request deletion of your account. We will delete or anonymise personal data from active systems, except information we must retain for legal, security, fraud-prevention, or accounting reasons, or content already downloaded by others offline.
Notifications: you can disable push notifications in device settings.
Ads: you can use Premium/ad-free options where offered, reset advertising ID in device settings, and respond to consent prompts where shown.

14. CALIFORNIA AND OTHER US STATE NOTICES
If you are a California resident, you may have rights under the CCPA/CPRA to know, delete, and correct personal information, and to opt out of certain “sales” or “sharing” for cross-context behavioural advertising where applicable. We do not sell personal information for money. To exercise rights, contact hello@ubooks.app. We will not discriminate against you for exercising privacy rights.

15. THIRD-PARTY LINKS AND SERVICES
The Services may link to third-party sites or SDKs. Their privacy practices are governed by their own policies. We encourage you to review Google Play, Google AdMob, Meta, and sign-in provider privacy notices.

16. CHANGES TO THIS POLICY
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date will change when we do. Material changes may be notified in the App or by email. Continued use after the effective date means you acknowledge the updated Policy, except where mandatory law requires express consent.
